Component ID: #ti1611083616

The U.S. Census Bureau is sending census employees to rural, remote, and/or sparsely populated areas of the United States and Puerto Rico to ensure an accurate and complete count.

Update Leave is a special operation to drop 2020 Census invitation packets at households in areas where the majority of households may not receive mail at their home’s physical location, such as small towns where mail is only delivered to post office boxes or areas recently affected by natural disasters. This operation reaches approximately 6.8 million households in the United States and Puerto Rico.

The Census Bureau conducts the Update Enumerate operation in locations where it is difficult to deliver mail and for households that may not be able to respond online (because of low internet availability). Update Enumerate operations are primarily conducted in remote parts of northern Maine and southeast Alaska. In these areas, census takers visited approximately 6,500 households and conduct the census in person.
